AIMING HIGH
Recently three DSA Business Services employees were recognised publically for their individual excellence in the workplace. At a special presentation ceremony held at the Revesby Workers’ Club and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra, Justin Scott, Michelle Brown and Anne McCabe were presented with Pride of Workmanship plaques and certificates.
The Pride of Workmanship program is a Rotary initiative which has gained wide recognition both in Australia and overseas for its acknowledgement of individuals’ effort and exemplary contributions to their vocations.
DSA (Disability Services of Australia) is one of Australia’s largest and most respected providers of employment and community support services to people with a disability. From its early beginnings in 1956, employing seven people with a disability, it currently provides support for more than 2,000 people. It is committed to a person centred approach and with its philosophy of enhancing the lives of people with a disability, programs and opportunities include Transition to Work, community participation programs for school leavers, support in the home, assistance to find employment in an open employment environment. It also provides employment for over 500 people with a disability through DSA Business Services, supplying contract packaging and assembly and labour hire.
DSA had no hesitation in recommending local employees, Justin, Michelle and Anne to receive the Pride of Workmanship Awards for their excellent work practices. All three work at the Condell Park factory and have been working there for many years.
Justin is a valued member of the team with an amazing eye for detail and can remember configurations of pallets for jobs and has a good grasp of the correct order of jobs he has completed. He is able to identify mistakes in production and will help others to learn how to do the jobs to a high standard. One of his favourite tasks is the stacking and taping of boxes. He was very excited and happy to receive his award.
Michelle has been working for DSA since 1985 and is well liked by her colleagues and is very caring and thoughtful towards them. She is a very conscientious worker who rarely takes time off. She is full of good ideas and is willing to share her ideas for improvements. She is always willing to have a go at new jobs. Michelle was very proud and excited on receiving her award. When asked what was her favourite job she cheekily replied, “The sitting down jobs!”
Anne is very aware of others around her. She is very thoughtful and kind and always there to support people when they are sad. Anne will always try new jobs no matter how complex they may seem at first. She takes great pride in the work she does at the DSA. One of her favourite jobs is assembly work as it is more varied than other jobs. Anne too, was very excited on receiving her award.
The Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra was very proud to acknowledge their achievements and present them with their Pride of Workmanship Awards.

"Give Poverty the Boot"
Give Poverty the Boot is a project set up by the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra in 2009 to collect quality used school shoes which can be sorted and distributed to Australian Indigenous Communities and countries in the Pacific Region. Club Member, Sue Ashton, first came up with the idea to collect shoes from our local schools. Picnic Point Public School became the first primary school in the area to embrace the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra's "Give Poverty the Boot" project and in their first collection week managed to fill four large collection bins with shoes.
The following schools participate in "Give Poverty the Boot":
Bankstown Grammar School
Condell Park High School
Condell Park Public School East Hills Boys High School East Hills Public School
Milperra Public School Padstow Heights Public School Padstown North Public School
Padstow Park Public School Panania Public School Peakhurst South Public School Picnic Point High School Picnic Point Public School Revesby Public School Revesby South Public School Sir Joseph Banks High School Tower Street Public School
Wattawa Heights Public School
Yagoona Public School
The Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra regularly sort through the donated shoes and have already sent many shoes to the Philippines with the help of Rotary's Donations in Kind (DIK) "Give Poverty the Boot" is an ongoing, unique project of the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra. Shoe collection, shoe packing and shoe shipment occur regularly throughout each Rotary year.
Revesby Wirrimbirra Club Member, Andrew Duclos, came up with the fantastic idea to make some starter packs for a local Mental Health facility that helps people move into their own independent accommodation. This is an ongoing project and every week Club Members bring specific items (such as tea, coffee, soap, shampoo, washing powder, pegs, etc) for the packs to our Club meetings.
The Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra recently had the pleasure of donating five completed "Starter Kits" to Liverpool-Fairfield Mental Health Residential Support Service. Our Club is so proud to be involved in a project that gives people living with a major mental health illness, assistance to develop community living skills and enables them to rediscover some independence.

To celebrate To celebrate 2011 Seniors Week the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra, in conjunction with the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, organised and rana free event for anyone over 60 years of age "Adventure before Dementia". The purpose of the event was to promote and educate Seniors on the importance of nutrition and physical activity and the Revesby Wirrimbirra "Adventure B4 dementia" event certainly achieved this!
Padstow Bowling Club's generous donation of their dance floor and bowling green, complete with free lawn bowling lessons after each program, enabled our Rotary Club to provide this great event for local Seniors.
Seniors were able to attend a morning or afternoon program which both included fun and dynamic activities such as zumba, pilates, and Thai Chi. Both programs also contained an informative session on nutrition which was facilitated by a local 2nd year university student and, along with some of the Revesby Wirrimbirra Rotary Club's younger members who participated in everything all day, provided an opportunity for intergenerational understanding and connections. The morning program was also fortunate enough to have a qualified chemist from Bankstown Hospital facilitate a very enlightening and beneficial session on taking medication. After each session the Rotary Club of Revesby Wirrimbirra provided a free BBQ to revitalise the "Adventure B4 Dementia" participants.
We hope to make the event an even bigger success in 2012.
